Michael Mondavi Educational Seminar and Tasting

Michael Mondavi is known as the “quiet icon” among his friends and colleagues. He is widely credited with helping to establish and build the Napa Valley wine industry. Michael founded Robert Mondavi winery with his father in 1976, today he owns the Michael Mondavi Family Winery with his son and daughter. I had the fortune of working with Michael for 3 years, he is one of the living legends in Napa Valley. Join Pearl Wine Company in welcoming Michael and hearing the story of Napa Valley through his eyes. The story of the Mondavi Family and what it is like to make wine in Napa today.

For four generations the Mondavi family has crafted world-class wines in the Napa Valley.  In 1999, Michael Mondavi, together with wife Isabel, son Rob Jr., and daughter Dina, purchased the land to plant the Animo Vineyard in Atlas Peak. Today, the family-owned Estate is comprised of two distinct Napa Valley vineyards with unique growing conditions and terroirs.

In keeping with Mondavi family traditions, farming the Michael Mondavi vineyards adheres to sustainable and organic standards. The family believes that the best grapes come from healthy vineyards and endeavors to maintain the health of the Napa Valley ecosystem for future generations.

Winemaking duties at the Michael Mondavi Family Estate are shared between Michael Mondavi’s son, Rob Mondavi Jr., and Tony Coltrin, who understand that wine is a reflection of both where it comes from and the people who make it.  They aim to make wines with integrity, balance and a sense of place.

We are honored to host Michael Mondavi for this weeks edition of Why Not Wednesday at the Joy Burns Center at DU. Starting at 6 o’clock pm we will have a social mixer followed by an educational tasting, then a reception where we will be tasting the Mondavi family wines.

M by Michael 2006, 2010, 2012 :: Reg $220 ($200 EVENT PRE-SALE PRICE)

‘M’ is the flagship wine of the Michael Mondavi Family Estate portfolio, a Cabernet Sauvignon sourced exclusively from the highest elevation blocks of Animo Vineyard atop Atlas Peak. The varied exposures require exacting management and multiple picking passes to assure that the grapes are picked at ideal ripeness levels with the flavor development required to make a wine of the highest caliber. ‘M’ is an elegant, dynamic Cabernet Sauvignon inspired by both the timeless reds of Bordeaux and the legendary Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernets of the 1960s and early ’70s that Michael made himself. A harmonious wine that wine reward extended cellaring, ‘M’ is made in very limited quantities, with fewer than 300 cases produced.

2015 Animo Savignon Blanc :: Reg $68 Sale $59

Animo is an Italian word for heart or spirit. In the family’s experience, some vineyards have it, and some don’t – a pervading spirit that presents the opportunity of producing something that is truly exceptional. An experienced vintner recognizes that dormant energy of such a site before it has even been planted, its potential evident in the raw material, from the soil to the curvature of the land and sun exposures.

Michael Mondavi sensed the potential of Animo at first sight, and the continually developing wines that are produced here have spirit to spare. The Animo Vineyard is planted to a mere 15 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vines in a relatively uniform rocky volcanic soil infused with red streaks of iron. The vines climb from an elevation of 1,270 to 1,350 feet on the slope of Atlas Peak, overlooking Napa Valley. At this elevation, the grapes enjoy a protracted growing season, and harvest generally extends well into October. Variations in elevation and sun exposure require numerous picking passes at harvest time. The attention paid to each individual vine is reflected in the quality of the finished wine.
