Masseria LiVel- The Heel of Italy

In 1999 the Falvo family bought a 128-acre property in the South-Eastern part of Italy on the Salento peninsula, also known as the “heel of Italy”. Their purchase gave new life to a winery project originally born in the XIX Century. The original structure of Masseria Li Veli had already been established as a cellar at the time by Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco, an internationally known Italian economist and university professor, whose ambitious project was to transform the Masseria into a model cellar for the entire South of Italy. Today the beautifully restored Masseria covers an area of 33.000sqm. The winery is surrounded by 33 hectares under vine, mainly cultivated with native alberello-trained vines, at a high-density planting. Li Veli highlights the Salento region’s principal native varietals, including the whites Verdeca and Minutolo and the reds Negroamaro, Primitivo, Susumaniello and Aleatico, which are made into powerful, inky-dark wines of great character and elegance. All wines are produced exclusively by cultivating these grapes in the most suitable conditions according to traditional methods.

The entire wine-making process takes place into the large cellar built in a light-colored stone called carparo. Beyond the main entrance is the barrel cellar, protected by a large glass door and located on the ground level beneath groin vaults where a cooling system guarantees an ideal temperature for wine maturation. The total capacity of the cellar is of approximately 10,000 hectoliters, divided between steel vats and 400 French oak barriques. All the grapes of Li Veli’s estate vineyards are produced according to sustainable methods. In addition, the rest of the workings in the cellar are made with a special care for the environment.

Masseria LiVeli Orion Primitivo Salento IGT 2015 :: $17 Sale $15

The name Orion comes from the Greek and refers to the fortified road nearby the vineyards of Masseria Li Veli (called Limite dei Greci) which in past times used to be considered the border between the Longobards domains to the North and the Byzantium reign to the South-East. Orion is a Primitivo in purezza, fresh, pleasant, full and soft with a remarkable persistence. Dense ruby red with a purplish rim, it is immediately intense on the nose with marked aromas of ripe and fleshy red fruits, notably cherries followed by spicy notes of cinnamon and nutmeg; in the mouth it is full, powerful, smooth and very long, with a well defined acid streak which makes it fresh and pleasing.

Masseria LiVeli Passamante Salice Salentino DOC 2015 :: $17 Sale $15

The big vineyard of Negroamaro located next to Masseria Li Veli, surrounded by a perimeter of big pine trees, is just beside a forest called “Passamante“. The reason for this name is that in the past, people who wanted to “have a tumble in the hay” with their lover, especially if not allowed, used to pass by this grove. As a consequence, this started to be considered The Forest of Lovers and took on this name from the words “Pass” (to pass) and  “Amante” (lover)… The peculiar scent of the vegetation in this maquis is perfectly in harmony with the organoleptic properties of the wine.
