The Prince of Argentina, Ernesto Catena
Ernesto Catena, the owner of Ernesto Catena Vineyards in Argentina, is the eldest son of Nicolás Catena of Catena Zapata. A 4th generation winemaker, Ernesto has traveled and lived around the world, and along the way has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Economy, a Master’s in Design in Milan and a degree in history in London. Defined by many as the “bohemian” side of the Catena family, Ernesto is a tireless and avid reader, painter, art collector, horseman, polo player and archer. While president of Bodegas Escorihuela, Ernesto felt the need to produce wines that would reflect his basic beliefs: high quality, a different style from the majority of wines being made at the time, smaller volumes and a strong brand concept. In 2002, Ernesto Catena Vineyards was created to express those beliefs. His credo says it all:
“We believe in making wines as if we were painting a picture or composing a song. We adhere to the creation from the man-earth communion, exegesis of the divinity present in the vine.
We believe in our roots and in returning to them, and embracing them, creating a new tradition, ours, timeless and personal, alien to the vortex and absolutely present. We believe man is at the same time an artist and witness, who with passion and work surrenders his hands in offering and gives us the wine and its delight.
To wine, to the hands that made it, to the custodians who love it and to those who will drink it forever, Salud!”

SINGLE VINEYARD BIODYNAMIC
Deep colored, with complex aromas in which one nds the plum and violet typical of the varietal, coupled with a hint of fig jam, in a delightful company of vanilla, chocolate, and smoky subtlety courtesy of its time in oak barrels. In the mouth it’s “round”, completely balanced, with silky tannins and great lingering finish.
Alma Negra’s estate vineyards are located in the premier growing regions of Valle de Uco, Agrelo, La Consulta, Vistaflores and Rivadavia. In addition to estate-grown fruit, partnerships with local producers allow Alma Negra’s oenologists and agricultural engineers to work together with growers and purchase grapes specially selected for their blends. These grapes are identified by hectare each year and a collaborative effort ensures they are of the best quality, with low yields.
Alma Negra wines are made entirely from high-quality fruit from distinguished vineyard sites. This attention to detail and quality results in wines of unique character — crafting changing blends year after year. The winery employs modern winemaking techniques along with Ernesto’s lifelong passion to produce the outstanding wines of Alma Negra.
Alma Negra Brut Rose :: Reg $24 Sale $21
The expression of beauty is different in every soul, and there can be a dark, mysterious side. Alma Negra, which means dark soul, honors the unexplored depths of beauty in the shadows of our souls. The winery achieves this by uniting many layers of beauty into one wine — each layer revealed in different ways to different people, making the beauty truly unique to every soul. Alma Negra began in 2003 with just 11 small barrels.
Alma Negra M Blend :: Reg $24 Sale $21
The M in this wine’s name represents the word Mendoza and indicates that this is a blend of varietals from Mendoza, Argentina. It also pays tribute to the overlying guise of Mystery that is Alma Negra. Predominantly Bonarda, this blend changes from vintage to vintage and is the wineries primary cuvee.
Dark berry fruit, dried cherries and hints of chocolate on the nose lead to flavors of ripe berries, black cherry, cocoa and a tinge of smoke in this dense and well-balanced wine. The finish lingers with dark ripe fruit, balanced acidity and a smooth mouthfeel.
