Colosi- Wines from the coast of Sicily


Since 1987 Cantine Colosi has been producing native Sicilian wines. Consisting of 24 acres of vineyards in Salina, a small island in the Eolian Archipelago, Colosi occupies an area of the island recognized for both its orientation and for the physical-chemical nature of the soil whose volcanic origins are particularly suitable for vine cultivation. The new winemaking cellar, surrounded by the Malvasia vineyards, was completed in 2004. The winery is located underground in order to have a constant temperature for the optimum care of the wine and to respect the strict preservation rules of the Eolian Archipelago. Irrigation in the vineyard is absent and this causes severe stress on the plant during the summer months. Grape harvest occurs in the first part of September for Malvasia grapes in order to produce a dry Malvasia, in the second half of harvest Malvasia grapes become passiti wines, this is when Malvasia grapes reach higher sugar content. With three generations of experience, Colosi is led by enologist Piero Colosi in collaboration with his father Pietro.




This week in store we have the International Manager for Colosi, Claudio Itaglia. Based in Rome – he not only manages all sales and marketing, he also consults with the winemaking team. Claudio has been representing wineries in both an International role & his own import company in Italy.  Claudio also has his own podcast and Wine Soundtrack, that he produces in Italian with many of the leading winemakers from Italy. Here is what we’ll be sampling:

Colosi Rosato Terre Siciliane IGP 2015 :: Reg $13 Sale $12

This rosè wine is made from the Nero D’avola and Nerello Mascalese grapes. The soil is limestone and sand. The vines are trained on a vertical trellis and is harvested the second half of September. This wine sees no oak. It’s bright pink in color with tasting notes of berries. It’s well balanced, soft yet acidic. Pairs well with red meat, charcuterie and cheddar cheese.

Colosi Grillo Terre Siciliane IGP 2016 :: Reg $15 Sale $13.50

This wine is made of %100 Grillo grapes. It’s vineyards soil is calcareous and sandy and is located in Sciacca, off the southwestern coast of Sicily. The grapes are harvested in the second half of September and is aged 4 to 5 months in stainless steel tanks followed by one month in the bottle. Notes of ripe golden apple, tropical fruits, and acid balance out this wine.

Colosi Nero d’Avola Terre Siciliane IGP 2015 :: $18 Sale $16

%100 Nero d’avola this wine is grown in Agrigento on the southern coast of Sicily. With limestone soil the vines are trained vertically on trellises. After harvested in the second half of September the grapes are aged for 5 months in stainless steel. It’s a dark ruby red in color with intense cherry aromatics. It’s a juicy full bodied wine. Pairs well with red meats, pasta with red sauce and aged cheese.

Colosi Malvasia della Lipari Passito di Salina DOC 2009 :: Reg $40 Sale $36

The Malvasia della Lipari Passito di Salina is %100 Muscat grapes. The vineyard is located on the western coast of Sicily. The soil is clay and the sapling vines are harvested at the end of August or beginning of September. Pressed gently immediately after harvest with light skin contact for four to five days. Aged in stainless steel this golden yellow wine has notes of honey, apricot, citrus and fig. It is soft, fresh and well balanced. Pairs well with desserts such as mascarpone or aged cheese.

Saturday Tasting

Anthem a cider producer out of the pacific northwest has sourced their fruit locally from Washington and Oregon, and does all production in Salem, OR. Once the fruit is received, it is immediately sent off to Hood River Juice Company in Hood River, OR. Anthem produces year round as well as seasonal ciders. Stop in to try some really great and refreshing ciders!
