Why Not Wednesday- Cantine Colosi

During this heat wave we’re having, Cantine Colosi is the perfect cool down. These wines are priced well and overdeliver. Since 1987 Cantine Colosi has been producing native Sicilian wines. Consisting of 24 acres of vineyards in Salina, a small island in the Eolian Archipelago, Colosi occupies an area of the island recognized for both its orientation and for the physical-chemical nature of the soil whose volcanic origins are particularly suitable for vine cultivation. The new winemaking cellar, surrounded by the Malvasia vineyards, was completed in 2004. The winery is located underground in order to have a constant temperature for the optimum care of the wine and to respect the strict preservation rules of the Eolian Archipelago. Irrigation in the vineyard is absent and this causes severe stress on the plant during the summer months. Grape harvest occurs in the first part of September for Malvasia grapes in order to produce a dry Malvasia, in the second half of harvest Malvasia grapes become passiti wines, this is when Malvasia grapes reach higher sugar content. With three generations of experience, Colosi is led by enologist Piero Colosi in collaboration with his father Pietro.


This week in store we have the International Manager for Colosi, Claudio Itaglia. Based in Rome – he not only manages all sales and marketing, he also consults with the winemaking team. Claudio has been representing wineries in both an International role & his own import company in Italy.  Claudio also has his own podcast and Wine Soundtrack, that he produces in Italian with many of the leading winemakers from Italy. 2016 Cantine Colosi Salina Bianco, Sicily Italy ::  $15 Sale $13

Straw yellow with golden highlights. the bouquet is floral and offers notes of tropical fruits and citrus. on the palate it is fresh and balanced with good softness. perfect with seafood, shellfish and sushi.


2016 Cantine Colosi Grillo, Sicily Italy :: $15 Sale $13

Straw yellow colour, with intense ripe fruit (golden apple), followed by sensation of tropical fruits bouquet. good sapid towards acidic – good balance.


2015 Cantine Colosi Salina Rosso, Sicily Italy :: $15 Sale $13

Dark ruby red, with intense fruit aromas of cherries and spices like vanilla and black pepper with a hint of salt. on the palate is warm and persistent a good intensity and equilibrium. red salina can be aged for some years. perfect with traditional eolian dishes, with red meats and aged cheese.


2016 Cantine Colosi Nero D’Avola, Sicily Italy :: $15 Sale $13

Dark ruby red, with intense fruit aromas, especially cherries. dry, full-bodied, warm wine and youthful. perfect with red meats cooked any style, pasta with tomato sauce and aged cheese.
