CAB IS KING – Why Not Wednesday

You often hear people say “Cabernet is King!” This week we are going to explore four domestic Cabernets that show the strength, power and finesse of the small fruited, dark, thick skinned Variety. Cabernet originates from Bordeaux France. Here in the United States we have had a true affinity for the variety. Dating back to the turn of the century we started planting Cabernet in California, starting in the Lodi region it wasn’t until the Judgment of Paris in 1976 that Cabernet from the New World (California) was put on the map. When Stags Leap Wine Cellars came in first place amongst 10 wines in the blind tasting. Today, Cabernet is almost synonymous with California, especially Napa Valley. So, with all the history in mind we thought we would explore four cabernets that all have something to prove. From Emblem from the Michael Mondavi Family where there is over 120 years of knowledge making, Consortium which is a culmination of 6 winemakers getting together to make what has been hailed as ‘the best pound for pound’ Cabernet in Napa, to Nine Hats a one of a kind project in the Columbia Valley and finishing with Camp Cabernet produced by Kenny Likiprakong who considers himself to be a Hobo winemaker.

This is definitely a tasting not to miss.. oh and our own Josh Hillman will be leading the tasting!

2017 Camp, Sonoma County CA – Cabernet Sauvignon :: $20 Sale $18

Camp Wines were created by the Hobo Wine Co. in 2011 to showcase the quality and value of Sonoma County wine. They work with top growers and vineyard managers in very high quality and responsibly farmed, though lesser known, vineyards throughout Sonoma County to produce deli- cious, approachable, and affordable wines. Like Hobo, the Camp wines employ native yeasts and malolactic bacterias for the primary and secondary fermentations without the use of commercial fermentation aids or additives. The wines are aged in real oak barrels and/or stainless steel tanks vs. alternatives or flavoring agents.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Malbec all from responsibly farmed vineyards throughout Sonoma. Strong dynamic flavors of ripe fruit(strawberry, raspberry, and plum,), spice, and fresh tobacco.

2016 Nine Hats, Columbia Valley WA – Cabernet Sauvignon :: $26 Sale $22

Launched in 2007, Nine Hats was inspired by Long Shadows’ team of nine internationally renowned vintners. In the beginning, there was one Nine Hats wine, a red blend created from Long Shadows’ declassified barrels to support the winemakers’ ongoing, strict selection process for their signature wines. The overwhelming success of the Red Wine lead to the expansion of the brand and Nine Hats has come out of the “shadows” to assemble a portfolio of nine uniquely sophisticated wines.

Vibrant aromatics of black cherry, espresso beans and bittersweet chocolate introduce this richly structured Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a multi-layered wine with expressive flavors of black and red berries complemented by notes of savory spice. Its luscious mouthfeel persists across a lengthy finish.

2016 Band of Vintners ‘Consortium’, Napa Valley CA – Cabernet Sauvignon :: $44 $38

Band of Vintners is the outcome of seven wine industry friends who regularly get together to taste wine and talk shop. The collective “insider” knowledge of where the best fruit can be sourced, where the deals can be found, and where favors can be called in when needed, was contagious, and surprising. The outcome, is a wine that the makers are proud to share with friends, family, and neighbors.

Two-thousand-sixteen was a perfect vintage for Cabernet Sauvignon. A cool, wet winter led to deeper, darker skins and a warm spring / summer fostered slow, balanced ripening and vibrant, red fruit. This wine leads with blue and black fruit on the nose, and with a little time in the glass, develops notes of graphite and violets. A cassis-like viscosity coats the entire palate, unveiling Morello cherry and the ripe flesh of a plum, finishing with a hint of bay leaf. The acid and fine tannins will allow for complexity to develop over the next 3-5 years in bottle, but the overall balance of the vintage allows for this wine to be enjoyed now.

2016 Emblem, Napa Valley CA – Cabernet Sauvignon :: $44 Sale $38

For four generations, the Mondavi family has strived to craft world-class wine in the Napa Valley. Emblem wines are symbolic of that tradition, as Michael Mondavi works side by side with his children, Rob and Dina, to produce two single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons that uniquely express their Napa Valley heritage.

exudes aromas of freshly muddled boysenberries, warm vanilla bean and toasty cardamom. The welcoming notes of this wine offer voluminous and supple aromas accompanied by rich tannins and dark fruits of plum and ripe dark brambly berries. Well balanced, with a soft and layered mouth feel make this wine a simply delicious expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Able to age or ready to enjoy now.
