Prosecco! Meet Stefano Marangon with Bisol
This Why not Wednesday we explore Prosecco! Many of of know and love this Italian sparkling wine. At times we think the wine can be sweeter or even fun and playful. There is also a serous side of Prosecco! This weeks Why Not Wednesday we explore that side! Prosecco is made from a grape varietal called Glera , formerly known as Prosecco. The name is derived from that of the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated. Prosecco DOC is produced in nine provinces spanning the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. Prosecco Superiore DOCG comes in two varieties: Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, which can only be made in the Treviso province of Veneto on the hills between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene (north of Treviso), and the smaller Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced near the town of Asolo.
The Bisol family, whose historic winery is located in Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene, manages 308 acres of vineyards in the DOCG area, spread over 35 plots in premier locations. The feather in their cap is their seven acres holding on the summit of the Cartizze hill. Bisol pursues the highest levels of quality and seeks to elevate the notoriety of the entire Valdobbiadene appellation. Their integrated approach to production begins with a careful selection of vineyards and continues with direct management of each phase of viticulture and vinification right up to the final bottling. The owners of some of the steepest hills in the area, Bisol’s vineyards are worked by hand and cared for using sustainable techniques. Sitting on the cutting edge of tradition, Bisol continuously studies the best techniques for this historic region. Each year the family tests at least six new vinification techniques in order to better understand this unique terroir.
This week we have national sales rep. Stefano Marangon in store. He was born in Treviso, a small quaint town in Veneto, Italy, in 1985. His mother, born in Portland, Oregon, inspired Stefano’s curiosity about American culture. He received a master’s degree in Economics and Management from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. Stefano studied abroad in Antwerp, Belgium, an experience that significantly influenced his interest in international and cultural awareness. After graduation he immediately dedicated himself to improving his business skills in the wine market. In fact, wine is Stefano’s true passion. He joined Bisol Vitivicoltori to lead Bisol Prosecco sales in the Americas. This position allows him to face the different angles of selling fine Prosecco in a multitude of business and cultural scenarios. Stefano lives in Treviso with his two dogs, Choco and Garcia.

It is produced with selected grapes from the hills of Conegliano, terroir hence its minerality and dry extract, and those of Valdobbiadene, which give crispness, acidity and freshness. A particularly stimulating Prosecco on the palate and rich in malic acid. There are, in addition to the Glera, parts of Verdiso and, to a lesser extent, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. A focus in the maceration and pressing, that is, the stop of the must with the skins for the entire night at a low temperature, allows the best expression of varietal aromas that exalt the bouquet, the fruity taste and flavor.

Bisol Cartizze Valdobbiadene Superiore 2016 $48 sale $44
Cartizze refers to a hilltop area in Valdobbiadene characterized by rocky terrain that winds along the crest of the steep hillside. Benefiting from sandy soil, complete sunlight exposure and continuous ventilation, this microclimate is an area of rare value. In Cartizze, Glera ripens at a slower rate and, consequently, enjoys a richer, more harmonious acidity. The color is light straw yellow, the perlage is lively, persistent and subtle. The bouquet is as elegant as the scents of wildflowers. It is agreeably fruity with scents of apple, pears and peaches. The flavor is sapid, full and balanced with a contained graciousness and accompanied by an intense and elegant fruitiness.
